The baby weighs about 1 ½ ounces and is about 3 ½ inches long. The baby can now make complicated facial expressions, like frowning and grimacing (grimacing is the look people often have when they are disgusted). The baby’s heart already began beating at around 3 weeks, but by now parents can actually hear their baby’s heart if they get an ultrasound (sometimes you can even hear a baby’s heartbeat earlier!).An ultrasound is like a special camera that allows the doctor and family members to watch the baby (it’s sort of like watching a movie of their baby except that it is really happening.
The second trimester, the second third of pregnancy, starts around when the baby is 11 weeks old. Normally, during the second trimester, you can easily tell that a Mom is pregnant. The baby is getting bigger so her tummy starts to stick out; lots of people call this a “baby bump” because the bump shows that a baby is there!
